Sri Lanka attracts over 200,000 Chinese tourists this year
Over 200,000 Chinese tourists had arrived in Sri Lanka till September this year with over 18,000 arriving last month alone, statistics released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Ministry showed here Monday.
Over 1.5 million tourists have arrived in the country so far this year with the government recently announcing they were expecting to achieve a 2.5 million arrival target by the end of 2017.
India was the leading market with the largest number of tourist arrivals in September, followed by China and Britain. However with September falling under the off-peak season, total arrivals fell 2.3 percent to 145,077 compared to the same month last year, data from the tourism office showed.
Sri Lanka's Tourism Minister John Amaratunga recently announced that arrivals were expected to increase, including from China, during the month-long Colombo International Shopping Festival which began on Oct. 1.
He said the festival will provide world-class and internationally renowned original brands at competitive prices. The event will be held under the theme "One Island, One Big Mall."
Sri Lanka's government recently said it aims to double the number of tourists to 5 million per year by 2020 as part of a new tourist strategy to boost revenue to the South Asian island country.
According to the Central Bank, Sri Lanka has earned over 2 billion U.S. dollars from tourism so far this year.

Japan scientists grow drugs in chicken eggs
Japanese researchers have genetically engineered hens whose eggs contain drugs that can fight serious diseases including cancer, in a bid to dramatically reduce the cost of treatment, a report said Monday.
If the scientists are able to safely produce "interferon beta", a type of protein used to treat illnesses including multiple sclerosis and hepatitis, by rearing the hens, the price of the drug -- currently up to 100,000 yen ($888) for a few microgrammes -- could fall significantly, said the English edition of the Yomiuri Shimbun.
Researchers at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in the Kansai region kicked off the process by introducing genes that produce interferon beta into cells which are precursors of chicken sperm, the newspaper reported.
They then used these cells to fertilise eggs and create hens which inherited those genes, meaning the birds were able to lay eggs containing the disease-fighting agent.
The scientists now have three hens whose eggs contain the drug, with the birds laying eggs almost daily, the report said.
The researchers plan to sell the drug to pharmaceutical companies, halving its price, so the firms can use it first as a research material, the newspaper said.
Consumers may have to wait a while, as Japan has strict regulations concerning the introduction of new or foreign pharmaceutical products, with screening processes that routinely take years to complete.
But the team hopes that the technological breakthrough will eventually help drive down the cost of the drug to 10 percent of its current price, the newspaper reported.
Officials at the institute could not be reached for comment.

Microsoft is bringing its Edge browser to Android and iOS
While Microsoft is still officially working on the mobile version of Windows 10, it’s no secret that the company has all but given up on building its own mobile ecosystem. That only leaves Microsoft with one option: concede defeat and bring its applications to the likes of Android and iOS. That’s exactly what the company has been doing for the last few years and today the company announced that its Edge browser (the successor to the much — and often justly — maligned Internet Explorer) will soon come to iOS and Android, too. The company is also graduating its Arrow Launcher for Android and renaming it to Microsoft Launcher.
Even though Microsoft basically doesn’t play in the mobile OS and hardware space anymore, it still needs to have a presence on rival platforms if it doesn’t want to risk losing its relevancy on the desktop, too. Edge and the Microsoft Launcher are both key to this strategy because they’ll help the company extend the Microsoft Graph even further. The Graph is Microsoft’s cross-platform system for allowing you to sync the state of your work and documents across devices and the company sees it as key to the future of Windows.
Benchmarks contradict ‘Apple slowed down my iPhone’ claims
It’s a refrain we all hear every year around September: “I swear, whenever they release a new iPhone, Apple makes all the old ones run worse to make you upgrade.” But thousands of performance tests conducted over the years by Futuremark users show that the conspiracy is mostly in your mind.
If you don’t know Futuremark, it’s the company behind the benchmark software 3DMark (among others), which for years has been a standby for testing how devices from gaming PCs to phones perform.
3DMark has the device render demanding 3D scenes that stress different parts of the hardware, and tracks how quickly it calculates, how many frames per second it renders and so on. At the end, it combines all those metrics into a single score that’s easy to compare between devices or cards. Continue ►

Confidential IMF report indicated previous Govt. hadn’t paid bills up to Rs. 1.2 trillion: Mahendran
Former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran told the Presidential Commission of Inquiry on the controversial bond issuance yesterday that a confidential International Monetary Fund (IMF) report in his possession had revealed that in 2014 bills amounting to Rs. 1.2 trillion had not been paid by the then Government.
The previous administration, said the Former Governor, had suppressed these arrears in an attempt to “camouflage the problem” and “pretend everything was hunky dory.” Money had not been paid, he said, to, among others, the Road Development Authority (RDA), SriLankan Airlines, and “all sectors of the economy.” All of these bills, however, had been settled by 2015, he said subsequently.
Mahendran brought this to light in response to questions raised by Senior State Counsel Shaheeda Barrie on the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL)›s decision to forgo the hybrid system of private placement and auctions and replace it with a totally auction-based system on 27 February 2015.
Questioning the witness, Barrie noted that over 80% of the Government›s debt requirement, prior to this decision, had been raised through private placements. Mahendran, however, opted to call it a lopsided system rather than a hybrid one.
